Fira has everything a visitor needs, plus one of the most famous panoramas in the world

Fira, Santorini’s capital, is the island’s commercial and cultural center. Apart from the museums, galleries and cultural events, Fira has the island’s largest shopping center and the biggest choice of dining out and entertainment, while heading the nightlife section – many bars and cafes are actually on the caldera.

There is also a great choice of hotels and villas to rent. The volcano can be seen from almost every point on the path at the cliff’s edge that starts just above the Mayor’s office and finishes up on the hill at the Nomikos Conference center.

Walking on the old donkey trail from Fira down to the Old Port is a ‘must do’, but even though it is a downhill walk, in the full force of the Greek summer sun it can still be incredibly taxing, so before you commence the journey, make sure you have plenty of water. If you do manage to get the whole way down, you will be rewarded with amazing views across the caldera.
