Visiting Akrotiri Beach is considered a must thing to do in Santorini

Santorini | Kambia Beach

Kambia is a quiet beach with natural shade provided by rock formations

Several good beaches can be found near the prehistoric site of Akrotiri in Santorini, and Kambia is one of them, although a lesser known one. Like its neighbour Red Beach, Kambia has a distinct reddish sand that comes from the oxidized volcanic minerals that are responsible for the great russet-coloured layers of the cliffs of Santorini. It is not an organized beach, but you can find some shade underneath the surrounding rocks. The word Kambia in Greek means caterpillar. In the early spring thousands of caterpillars emerge from their pupae among the pines and turn into butterflies. This phenomenon is more pronounced on the southern and warmer side of the island at Akrotiri. You can get to Kambia by driving south from Fira, bypassing the village of Kaparies and turning left over a ridge.
