The old town of Rethymnon is one of the best-preserved towns of the Renaissance, directly linked to the sea. Lying in the heart of modern Rethymnon, it combines the oriental features of the Turkish period with Renaissance-style Venetian architecture. From Rethymnon to the east starts the endless beach hotel strip, which is one aspect of the city, while the old town dominated by the Fortezza (fortress) is very atmospheric. Worth seeing is the Sfendoni cave, protected by Unesco, and the many remarkable villages of the region. Scenic Anogia with its summer concerts, tranquil Agia Galini, a seaside village surrounded by three impressive mountains. Or quaint Episkopi, immersed in vineyards and olive groves and Plakias, a popular tourist destination with a 1,3 km long beach. Organized or not, Rethymnon beaches will beyond doubt, please every taste, like peaceful Panormos, Damnoni and Maliou to Riaki with its impressive rock formations.
