Andros | The Kairis Library

Discover Andros' roots in the Kairis library, home of 60,000 rare publications

The Kairis Library was founded in 1987 as a non-profit private legal entity, thanks to the efforts and persistence of the Andriot historian, Dimitrios I. Polemis. The Library holds around 60,000 volumes of rare publications, manuscripts, and extensive archives referenced to Andros shipping and courts, plus about 3,000 tomes from the collection of Theofilos Kairis, who was a scholar and priest in Andros (1784-1852). It also maintains numerous art works, a collection of ancient pots and statuettes, objects of historical value and items of popular culture. There is a book lending service and a children's book department. Kairis Library has established a fully equipped and advanced book binding workshop, offering training seminars and the maintenance of old books, documents and folklore objects.  It is housed in a neoclassical building that was donated to the Kairios Library by the Kampani family and it is funded through donations.
