Get a glimpse of modern Greek art at the Center of Contemporaty Art in Rethymno

Formerly known as the Kanakakis Gallery, this municipal museum was founded in 1992. Since 2008 the museum is housed in a renovated Venetian building – an old soap factory – in the old part of town. The permanent collection houses works by local artist Lefteris Kanakakis and works by contemporary Greek artists. The art collection originates from donations by collectors and artists like Alexis Akrithakis, Petros Zoumboulakis and of course Lefteris Kanakakis.

It includes works typical of the art production in Greece in the second half of the 20th century, projects that are part of the art movements that dominated abroad, such as geometric abstraction, abstract expressionism, neo-representational art, minimalism, and include sculptures, installations and environmental art, conceptual art, photography, and computer processed works of art.
